Album cover design for Joe Jackson Presents Max Champion in What a Racket

During the Spring of 2021, Maine Road Management asked me if I would be interested in working on a record cover design for musician Joe Jackson.

The brief was to create a design in keeping with the Victorian/Edwardian English musical hall style to illustrate a collection of recently discovered songs by a little-known and long-lost music hall artist called Max Champion.

After a conversation with Joe – and a few rough designs – it was decided a combination of stylised illustration and ornate typography would capture the essence of the music hall era.

I contacted David Lawrence – an illustrator whose background as a 'pastiche artist' in advertising and publishing, made him the perfect fit for depicting the character of Max Champion.

The design was rolled out to a 12’ vinyl sleeve, dust sheet and centre label as well as CD digipack and lyrics booklet.
